COMPANY HISTORY

Classique Floors was founded in 1977 by two floor covering craftsmen who dreamed of owning their own business. Lionel Walklate, his wife Betty, and their partner worked long hours to build their full service store. With their focus on helping their residential clients select quality floor coverings and seeing the installation through to completion they built a loyal following.

After a few years the partner left, and Classique Floors expanded to include small commercial work like THE GAP stores, The Limited stores, Banana Republic, and local businesses. Quality remodelers also became their customers such as Neil Kelly and City Home Improvement.

Later, as their reputation for fine quality work grew, they were recruited by larger commercial companies to handle the floor covering needs for the National Guard Armory,  Marion Retirement Center, OMSI’s flood restoration, schools, and larger office buildings.

The store’s original location was 172nd and NE Halsey.  In 1992, after outgrowing the original location, the business was moved to 142nd & SE Stark.

Daughter Judith Huck joined the business in 1992. Lionel and Betty retired in early 1998, and Judith has continued the tradition of quality products, professional installation and guaranteed customer satisfaction for their clients. In 2004 a nearby retail store was purchased, remodeled and the company moved into the new store at 14127 SE Stark.

Judith’s vision for the company is to see it continue as a top quality, full service store serving the residents of the Portland area with emphasis on the Gateway, East Portland and Gresham communities and continued involvement in the community.

Classique Floor’s staff is also committed to minimal environment impact, and their green-friendly efforts include carpet and carpet pad recycling, an expansive selection of sustainable flooring and countertop options, and a continuous search for ways to protect the planet.
