Are you considering linoleum flooring for your Portland OR home? We consider it a great flooring solution. Here’s why.
What is linoleum?
First, let’s explain what is linoleum.
Linoleum has a long successful track record as a durable flooring option. It was invented in 1855, patented in the 1860s and has been used in homes, offices and public buildings for years. It was even used throughout the Titanic.
Because it was the most popular flooring in the first half of the 20th century, you’ll find it in many vintage homes around Portland. It was rediscovered in the 1990s as a result of its natural anti-bacterial and biodegradable, not to mention sustainable, properties.
Linoleum flooring is made from linseed oil combined with tree resins, recycled wood flour, cork dust, limestone and mineral pigments, mounted on jute or canvas backing. This construction means that color and pattern are consistent throughout the thickness of the product (except for the backing). Since color and pattern aren’t limited to the surface of the product, they wear well, despite gouges, scratches and heavy traffic. If installed properly and well maintained, linoleum flooring can last more than 40 years.
You’ll find linoleum installed throughout a home (even on walls as wainscoting) as well as in commercial settings.
Versatility makes linoleum a great flooring solution!
Perhaps what is most striking about linoleum flooring is the range of vivid, saturated colors and patterns available – from traditional marbled styles, to graphic patterns and contemporary designs that are solid or flecked. Colors can be bold or subtle, primary or earth toned. Even better is that you can combine patterns and colors to create bold one-of-a-kind custom-cut designs for a contemporary home.
If you are restoring a period home in the Portland area, you’ll want to consider linoleum to match the original period design of your floors.
We love the versatility of linoleum and its ability to complement so many different design styles. Because it is soft underfoot, it makes standing for long periods of time a lot easier. That quality also makes it more forgiving of dropped items.
Linoleum floors are ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms and entryways where they can handle wear, tear and moisture. It can be installed over most subfloors, including concrete, although you will want to conduct moisture-testing before installing it.
You’ll love how easy linoleum is to clean, too. Simply damp mop it regularly with mild, non-ammonia-based cleansers.
