What better way to complete the historic look and feel of a bathroom than with marble and grey octagon tile. Especially when that bathroom is in the historic Craftsman house that Jennifer Morrow remodeled in McMinnville, Oregon, with the help of Classique Floors + Tile.
Here are other articles documenting this home remodel story:
In this article, we share the story of this bathroom and its dramatic makeover.
What did this bathroom look like before the renovation?
The bathroom that Jennifer Morrow radically transformed is located on the ground level of her house. The space is quite large and features a window.
As you can see in the image below, the choice of fixtures – in an eye-catching shade of mint green – made for a garish space that was more functional than appealing and had nothing to do with the Craftsman look and feel of the house that Jennifer was intent on recapturing.
Going from Mint Green to Marble and Grey Octagon Tile
The vision Jennifer had for this bathroom came from this image below which feels considerably more traditional and historic. Perfect, no?
To make that vision reality, the bathroom had to be gutted. The fixtures were removed, and the bathroom floors and walls were taken back to the original lath and plaster walls.
From there, the walls were insulated with modern-day materials and then further prepared to be waterproof and vapor proof around the shower and ready to receive tile.
Improving the Bathroom Layout
Jennifer decided that this bathroom would be more effective with a walk-in shower rather than a tub. As a result, she rearranged the space:
- The end of the room where the sink had been became a fully tiled marble shower that occupied the full width of the room.
- The shower itself included niches, a bench and grab bars.
- The shower became a step-in shower to be more limited-mobility friendly.
- The toilet was moved a bit closer to the wall to make more room for the sink.
- The shower floor and bathroom floor featured the beautiful grey and white tile pattern.
For the sink in this bathroom, Jennifer decided to use an antique, marble topped washstand that she already had and built a vessel sink into it. Not only did it work well with the inspiration image above, but it truly embodied a sense of history. That piece of furniture is pictured below.
In the image below, you see one of the shower niches and a bench, along with the beautiful new octagon floor tile pattern.
Take Your Time Deciding on the Right Grout Color for Your Tile Installation
Jennifer originally selected a darker grout color. However, once she saw the mockup of the tile with the marble, she opted for a lighter shade.
It’s important to take your time – as Jennifer did – in selecting grout colors. Depending on the look you’re trying to achieve, you can select a color that blends with your tile color, or provides contrast to show off the pattern of the tile installation.
In the image below, you see the grey octagon tile with the grout color selector kit.
The Historic-feeling Transformation is Complete Thanks to Marble and Grey Octagon Tile!
As you might imagine, the transformation is dramatic.
In addition to the tile work, Jennifer decided to add white wainscoting – which emphasized the white in the marble and in the octagon tile pattern – and painted the walls above the wainscoting a deep rich blue.
Jennifer replaced all of the shower, water and faucet fixtures. She also added new light fixtures.
Note the two niches in the image below.

The addition of shower curtains, towels and bath mats completes this historic bathroom renovation. The space is clean, crisp, yet also relaxing and timeless.
