A Houzz survey revealed high consumer confidence regarding the remodeling industry
A few months ago we shared our discovery of the Houzz website, a social media photo site devoted to home décor and interior design, boasting more than 1 million pictures of homes posted by professional designers, architects and other remodeling professionals. While many people plan their renovation projects on Pinterest, Houzz is actually the better choice, offering users the ability to browse pictures sorted by rooms as well as a host of products, articles, a section of local remodeling professionals, discussion boards, and “ideabooks” in which you can build a file of your favorite pictures to start virtually planning your next remodel.
Houzz popularity and remodeling worldwide is on the rise!
The hit rates for Houzz have grown tremendously in the past year, boasting millions of visits from web users worldwide. In March 2013, Houzz conducted a survey of 100,000 users with some enlightening findings. Home renovations worldwide are on the rise, increasing 12% compared to last year.
The survey also revealed that 8% fewer respondents than last year said they were delaying home renovation projects due to the economy. Eighty-four percent said they planned to decorate or re-decorate, 40% said they planned to remodel or build an addition, and 10% planned to build a custom home.
DIY or hire a professional?
It seems we’re either coming out of the Great Recession or most people have just decided that they’re not going to wait around for things to get better before taking steps to improve their surroundings.
Most homeowners surveyed who are planning to do a project in the next two years will hire a general contractor (58 percent), with a third planning to hire kitchen/bath (36 percent) or carpet/flooring professional (34 percent). Twenty-three percent plan to hire architects and 22%, interior designers.
The good news for those of us in the western part of the U.S? We lead the nation in confidence about home renovations. In fact, the survey reported that Portland, OR residents “have the highest percentage of respondents who believe now is a good time to renovate.”
How do you choose who to hire?
Not surprisingly, most people base their decision to hire a remodeling professional on “good reviews and recommendations” (81%), followed by “expert in their field” (70%), “personality I can work with” (67%), and “completed projects like mine” (59%). Only 8% chose their remodeling professional based on price.
By the numbers:
Here are some key findings, quick and dirty, about home owners in the West who do plan to remodel in 2013.
- 84% want to improve the look, feel, flow and layout of their homes;
- 54% want to increase home value;
- 57% want to upgrade the features and appliances in their home;
- 43% want to improve organization and storage;
- 36% want to increase energy efficiency; and
- 20% want to incorporate new technologies for their home.
