What is Marmoleum?
Marmoleum is a linoleum manufactured by Forbo Flooring Systems, a global player in high-quality commercial and residential floor coverings, which focuses on environmentally friendly, functional and design-oriented floors.
Linoleum – if you remember from What Makes Linoleum Flooring Such a Great Solution for Portland OR Homes? – is made from linseed oil combined with tree resins, recycled wood flour, cork dust, limestone and mineral pigments, mounted on jute or canvas backing. That makes Marmoleum flooring a material made of 97% natural raw materials and 43% recycled content. 72% of the natural raw materials are renewable and will grow back within 10 years. The entire product is biodegradable and is USDA certified 100% bio-based.
Not only is Marmoleum extremely durable, and long-lasting (up to 40 years or more if installed properly), but because the color and pattern permeate the entire product, nicks and scratches aren’t eye-sores and can be repaired.

What are the Benefits of Marmoleum Flooring?
Perhaps at the top of the list are the environmental benefits associated with Marmoleum. Our customers love that it is made from natural materials that outgas neither toxins nor chemical residues or VOCs, and that it is 100% biodegradable.
Marmoleum has antibacterial properties that prevent dangerous microbes like salmonella from spreading. It also helps reduce dust mites and many common allergies.
The anti-static properties of Marmoleum are such that dirt doesn’t stick to it, making this flooring easier to clean than many other products.
Combine that with being heat resistant (and not burning easily), being super-comfortable to stand and walk on and having an estimated floor life of fifty years under normal use, and it’s really hard to make a case against Marmoleum.
And then there are all those beautiful colors and designs, and that you can create a variety of complex and creative designs in any number of bold or subtle colors because the material can be cut for borders and other designs!
Ideal for homes and commercial installations
In addition to being ideal for residential settings, Marmoleum flooring makes a lot of sense for commercial installations.
Take healthcare were Marmoleum products are known to inhibit the growth and spread of infections such as MRSA, Norovirus, CRE and C Difficile, helping to contribute to a healthier and more hygienic environment in any hospital area.
The same goes for educational settings.
Marmoleum benefits allergy sufferers by helping maintain a clean and fresh environment; the flooring traps and reduces harmful allergens, only releasing them when cleaned.

How is Marmoleum Installed?
Marmoleum must be professionally installed. It requires a completely smooth, flat subfloor, and must be sealed and finished properly.
Each of the forms that Marmoleum comes in – 2 meter wide sheets, floating planks, glue down tiles and composite tiles – in different thicknesses requires skill and experience to keep out moisture and dirt. Furthermore, linoleum naturally tends to shrink in length and grow in width over time. Seasoned installers understand this and know how to compensate during the installation process. Classique Floors + Tile can help you.
Generally, Marmoleum can be installed anywhere unless there are significant moisture issues in the floor, i.e. concrete basements. We strongly recommend that you conduct moisture testing prior to any installation.
- Glue-down Marmoleum is great for bathrooms, laundry rooms, kitchens or utility rooms.
- Click-together or floating Marmoleum is ideal for areas that don’t have a lot of moisture, such as bedrooms and living areas.
Both click and glue-down modular tiles offer endless design and pattern possibilities.
When should you not use Marmoleum flooring in your home?
Marmoleum may not be the best flooring choice if your pets have frequent accidents.
You will need to take care of your Marmoleum floor (more on how to do that below), especially if you are serious about it lasting 40 years or more.
How easy is it to maintain Marmoleum Flooring?
Marmoleum linoleum floors are easy to clean and maintain thanks to their durable Topshield2 finish which provides exceptional performance against soiling, staining, scratching, and scuffing. Harsh alkalis or cleaners with high pH (such as Ammonia) should not be used as they will damage Marmoleum.
Once installed, simply damp mop with a neutral pH cleaning solution, like Marmoleum Floor Cleaner, at the correct dilution. Do NOT flood the floor.
In addition to regular cleaning, you will want to apply restorative care over time since the Topshield finish applied at the factory wears away with wear. That’s when the Marmoleum floor should be scrubbed with undiluted Marmoleum Floor Cleaner so you can then apply two thin coats of Marmoleum Floor Finish. This renews the protective layer and gives it a bit of a gloss finish.
You can find both Marmoleum Floor Cleaner and Floor Finish at Classique Floors + Tile.
Some further watchouts when caring for your Marmoleum flooring:
- Don’t use a steam cleaner or hot water when cleaning the floor. Only use the recommended cleaning solutions.
- Put pads on the feet of furniture to protect against dents and scratches.
- Avoid wearing spiked high heels on the floor.
- Do maintain the seal on the floor.
