Types of Stone Tile
When looking to add natural stone to your home, it’s important to consider what stone characteristics appeal to you, including the finish of the stone and where you will be using it.
For example, you may love the look of large format polished stone; placing that in a bathroom where floors can get slick when wet may not be what you have in mind.
Classique Floors + Tile carries a variety of natural stone tiles with honed, polished, and textured options. Our experts can help guide you to the right natural stone for the look and feel you want for your home.
Known for its beautiful colors, bands, streaks, and clouds, marble is a metamorphic stone that has been used in construction for centuries.
From the classic white Carrara and Calacatta marbles to black Negro Marquina with streaks of white veins or the warm tones of Crema Marfil, marble comes in a variety of colors and is one of the most popular natural stone choices. Each color offers a different look and feel for your space.
Marble is extremely versatile but as a softer and more porous natural stone, it can be susceptible to staining and etching. This popular tile can be used on many surfaces including floors, walls, backsplashes, and even in showers when properly installed and sealed.
As a sedimentary stone, limestone is formed from shells, coral, and calcium deposits. Because it is a softer stone that is easy to cut and shape, limestone is a popular choice for floors, walls, and backsplashes. Limestone tiles come in a range of warm colors.
Like marble it requires sealing to protect it from staining.
Travertine, another type of limestone, has a smooth texture with pitted holes throughout the surface that lends spaces a rustic, old-world appearance.
You’ll find travertine available in a variety of colors including cream, ivory, gold, and rust, It is commonly used for flooring, backsplashes, and stone accents.
The surface imperfections of travertine can be filled to make it easier to clean. Like marble, it requires sealing to protect from staining.
Possibly the most durable natural stone is granite. Its hard, non-porous surface results from its formation underground under extreme heat and pressure. It’s not easily damaged hence its popularity for both indoor and outdoor use.
Available in a wide range of colors, from classic black and white to more exotic shades like blue, green, and pink, granite is an ideal stone for flooring and countertop surfaces.
Slate is a stone that naturally forms in thin horizontal layers.
Slate tiles are usually darker in color than other stone tiles, with shades of grey, black, copper, and green being the most common. Slate is a popular choice for flooring because its uniquely textured surface makes it slip-resistant. For a smoother surface, it can be gauged.
Pebble Rock Mosaics
Pebble rock consists of small, tumbled, smooth natural pebbles that are left in their full shape or cut into thin slices, placed on a mesh and installed like a mosaic tile. They are available in a range of color blends.
Pebble rock mosaics have a textured surface that makes them slip-resistant. You’ll often find them used for bathroom and shower floors, not to mention in spa areas, where they feel delicious underfoot. They also look wonderful on walls, in niches, backsplashes as well as countertops where the tactile effect blends with intense visual interest.
Stacked stone tile – also known as ledger stone – is ideal for both indoor and outdoor wall applications. Its three-dimensional look creates an appealing texture with strong visual interest that you can use around a fireplace, grill, accent wall, and in patio areas.
Ledger stone comes in an array of colors and can be used to create a focal point in both contemporary and traditional decor.
Don’t Forget Stone Mosaics!
Mosaics are where stone shines!
You’ll find spectacular mosaics available in classic basket weaves, old-world pinwheel patterns, penny tiles, and dramatic geometric statement patterns. Imagine marble and granite mixed with glass tile, copper, and stainless steel. Find classic marble hexagons in sizes ranging from 1″ to larger formats. Mix stone and glass stick mosaics with 1″ square travertine stone tiles.
The possibilities are infinitely decorative and artful allowing you to make just the right design statement that ties together a backsplash with a wall and floor tile.
